Covington - Kenneth Lowell Newman, 77, Covington, died at 12:01 p.m. Sunday Jan 3, 1999 in Covington Manor Health Care Center where he had been a resident 3 years and in ill health 10 years. Born June 21, 1921 in Fountain County, he was the son of Clarence and Myrtle LaBaw Newman. He married Norma Edens in the Homer, Ill Methodist Church March 2, 1947 who survives. He graduated from Veedersburg HS in 1939. He attended Purdue University prior to serving as an officer in the US Naval Air Corps for 3 years. He then farmed retiring in 1986. He was a membe rof the Osborn Prairie United Church of Christ, a past Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent and trustee of the church and cemetery board. He was a WCI Coop director 25 years and chairman of the board 12 years. He served as Van Buren Twp Trustee 12 yeaers and Fountain County Council member. He also served on the Van Buren Twp Advisory Board. He was a membeer of Indiana Farm Bureai, past president of Purdue Ag Alumni; 4-H Council; a past member of Danville YMCA and 50-year member of Veedersburg Legion. He enjoyed cards and PU Sports. Survivors besides his wife include son, Kenneth Craig (Sue) Newman, Mt. Carmel, Ill; daughter Kristy Sue (Kris) Davis, West Lafayette; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; a brother and granddaughter. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shelby Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Byers and Paul Kent officiating.
